Development of a capacitive deionization stack with highly porous oxygen-doped carbon electrodes for brackish water desalination in remote coastal areas
-----------
Highlights
• O-doped porous carbon electrode exhibited an efficient desalination performance.
• The lab-scale CDI showed a high SAC of 14.95 mg g−1 and low Ev of 0.088 kWh m−3.
• The CDI-based system was developed for desalination in a coastal area in Vietnam.
• The system removed 98.4% Na+, 96.9% Cl− and 97.6% hardness from saline groundwater.
• Ion selectivity orders were Na+ < K+ < Mg2+ < Ca2+, and As < Cl− < NO3− < SO42−.
